On October 14th and 15th, researchers will complete the seismic measurements and strengthen the magnetometer station, with the support of the inmates of the Onanì-Mamone Prison.

On October 14th and 15th, research staff from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) will return to the Onanì-Mamone Prison to conclude the first phase of the geophysical investigations begun last March. Once again, the researchers will work alongside the inmates who played a key role in installing the field instruments in the spring.

Activities will be divided into two parts. The sixteen seismic stations installed in March , which continuously recorded the "background noise" of the Sardinian subsurface for six months, will be removed , having completed their task. The data collected will allow the identification of the main sources of seismic disturbance in the area. The magnetic and magnetotelluric station, however, will remain active : the high quality of the electromagnetic data has justified its maintenance. In preparation for winter, the installation will be consolidated to ensure continuity of measurements.

The investigations, coordinated by the Center for Geophysical Characterization for the Einstein Telescope (CCGET) and initiated as part of the recently concluded MEET project , aim to document the geophysical silence of the area nominated to host the Einstein Telescope, the future European gravitational wave observatory capable of detecting ripples in space-time generated by extreme cosmic events .

These geophysical measurement campaigns are the result of collaboration between the INGV, the Ministry of Justice, and the State Property Agency - Regional Directorate of Sardinia . The Prison Directorate and Penitentiary Police provided logistical and operational support at every stage , while some of the facility's inmates actively participated in the field operations , offering a concrete contribution to the research.

The collaboration represents a virtuous experience of institutional synergy and social inclusion, enhancing individual skills in an international scientific context.
