The Einstein Telescope (ET) is the most ambitious European project in the field of gravitational astrophysics: a third-generation observatory, to be built underground, capable of detecting gravitational waves produced by the most violent phenomena in the Universe — merging black holes, exploding neutron stars. Italy is putting forward the Sos Enattos site in Sardinia as the candidate location for this infrastructure. The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) is one of the research institutions working in support of this candidacy: its expertise in seismology, geodesy, applied geophysics and environmental monitoring is essential to demonstrate that the Sardinian subsurface has the characteristics required to host an instrument of extreme sensitivity.
